IMPACT Mentor Program

  • Killeen ISD's IMPACT Program was created to engage community members in achieving the overarching mission of the School District. This initiative offers structured opportunities for community members to serve as mentors to KISD students at all grade levels.

  • The IMPACT Program:

    • Aims to shift a student's perspective toward their future potential versus their current circumstances.
    • Addresses the psychological needs of students including feelings of belongingness, love, and self-esteem.
    • Provides additional adult visibility on campuses, contributing to a safer learning environment and fostering a culture of respect and acceptance.
    • Offers one-to-one mentoring or small group mentoring.
    • Serves as an option for Tier 2 or Tier 3 for Response to Intervention.
  • The IMPACT Mentors:

    • Care about the overall well-being of their students.
    • Serve as a role model, champion, coach, or friend.
    • Meet with students weekly during the school day.
    • Communicate with students at school and through the school.
    • Support students in academics, social interactions, behavioral responses, and leadership development.
    • Inspire students to think outside of the box when planning their future.
    • Follows the District's guidelines for mentoring KISD students.
    • Follows the Campus' protocols for access to students.
  • The IMPACT Mentors are Recruited:

    • KISD actively recruits community members to serve as IMPACT Mentors on campuses during the instructional school day.
      • The District seeks potential mentors from community and civic organizations, local churches, businesses, retirees, and residents..
      • All volunteer mentors must submit a KISD Volunteer Application and clear the background check. KISD requires all volunteers to resubmit an application at the beginning of each school year.

  • The IMPACT Mentors are Trained:

    • KISD conducts specialized training on the practices of an effective mentor program for volunteers who choose to serve in this role.
      • During the interactive training, participants will engage in activities to refine their concept of an effective mentor in a public-school setting and use the shared information to develop their plan for serving as a mentor in KISD.
      • The District offers a monthly training session on the third Thursday of each month (except March) from 9 AM - 11 AM at the KISD Jackson Professional Learning Center (JPLC), located at 902 Rev R A Abercrombie Dr., Killeen, TX 76543.
      • Community organizations and groups can make special arrangements to host a session to accommodate the needs of their members by contacting the Office of District and Community Relations at (254) 336-1707.
