Becoming A Classroom Teacher In Texas

There are five requirements to become a certified teacher in the state of Texas.
1. Obtain a Bachelor's DegreeYou must earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.- The Texas Administrative Code requires that candidates completing a Texas program must have a degree from a university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB)
- U.S. Department of Education Database for Accredited Colleges and Universities (outside source)
- Health Science Technology and Trades & Industrial Education certifications are exempt from the Bachelor's degree requirement
2. Complete an Educator Preparation ProgramYou must complete an Approved Educator Preparation Program.

3. Pass Certification ExamsYou must pass the appropriate teacher certification exams. Contact your program for exam approval.
4. Submit a State Application
You must apply to be certified after all requirements are met.
5. Complete FingerprintingAll first-time applicants must be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check.

Do you have a 4-year college degree? Become a Teacher in Killeen ISD and receive up to $5,000 reimbursement to cover the cost of your alternative certification program.
Who is eligible for the stipend?
- Current employees and substitutes who are enrolled or who wish to enroll in a TEA approved Alternate Certification Program to become a teacher in KISD.
- Employee must complete all components of Texas Education Agency certified program.
- Employee must secure teaching position in KISD and remain a teacher in the district for three years.
When will I receive the stipend?
Employees will receive the stipend upon the completion of their program, up to $5,000.
