General Information
Are students and employees required to self-screen prior to arriving to campus/work?
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to keep students home if they have a fever or do not feel well.
Employees who are feeling ill, should follow the normal steps to report an absence if they are not able to come to work. Federal COVID leave expired on June 30, 2021.Why is KISD not offering virtual learning?
At this time, due to the unavailability of funding and constraints under the Texas Education Agency, KISD is unable to offer Virtual Learning for the 2021-2022 school year.
Are students, employees or visitors required to wear a face covering?
Face coverings are a personal choice, and will be encouraged but not required for students, staff, and visitors. Face shields are an approved face covering and can be worn by staff and students.
Are visitors allowed on campus?
Yes, KISD will allow parents and visitors on all campuses this school year. Visitors must adhere to all COVID mitigation guidelines while on KISD facilities. If you are not feeling well, please do not come to the campus.
Is the district allowing students to bring water bottles?
Yes, students can bring reusable water bottles to fill up throughout the day.
Will distancing be practiced in the classroom?
KISD will continue to practice social distancing to the greatest extent possible.
Will capacity restrictions be in place at KISD venues?
Per the Texas Governor's Executive Order #37, no capacity restrictions related to COVID mitigation will be implemented.
What if I am not comfortable being around others who are not wearing a mask?
Face coverings remain optional for all per the Governor's Executive Order #38.
What is the plan for campus closures?
The district will work closely with the Bell County Health District to determine if closure of a campus, individual classrooms, and/or programs is warranted and for how long. Once a decision is made it will be communicated to the parents and staff affected.
Does an employee, who has tested positive for COVID-19, have to use their accrued leave?
Yes. As with other illnesses, employees will be required to use their accrued sick or personal leave, or request a leave of absence through FERP/TEAMS. COVID leave that had been granted by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) expired in June.
What if I don't have sick leave and I'm required to stay home due to testing positive for COVID-19?
Employees must use their state, local or comp leave if they test positive for COVID-19. Employees may contact HR leaveshr@killeenisd.org to explore leave options. Please note: The 10 days of Federal COVID leave expired on June 30, 2021. However, the Family Medical Leave Act may apply in some circumstances.

Does an employee, who has tested positive for COVID-19, have to use their accrued leave?

KISD Students Lab Confirmed COVID-19 Case
Are students required to make up missed work?
Parents must report the positive case to the campus nurse or a campus administrator for proper tracking and cleaning protocols.
Will student absences be excused?
Any COVID related absence with a parent or physician note will be excused. The student will still be required to adhere to the 90% compulsory attendance rule.

Student Make up Work
Are students required to make up missed work?
Yes, a student shall be responsible for obtaining and completing the make-up work in a satisfactory manner within the time specified by the teacher.
How will students receive make up work?
Parents/Students must contact teachers to receive make up work.
Teachers will assign make up work through printed packets or online learning management systems.

COVID-19 Vaccines
What if I have been vaccinated and deemed in close contact with someone?
If 14 days have passed since your second vaccination date, you do not have to quarantine. If you begin to feel symptomatic, seek medical attention.
What if I only got 1 dose of the Pfizer/Moderna vaccine and I come in close contact with a lab-confirmed covid-19 individual?
Adherence to CDC Guidelines requires 10 days of isolation. Individuals may return early on day 7 if you received a negative PCR COVID-19 test on day 5 of isolation.
If I am fully vaccinated and I test positive for COVID-19 do I have to isolate?
Yes, per CDC guidelines all individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must report the case to the district and meet the return to campus/work criteria which includes isolating for 10 days since the onset of symptoms or if asymptomatic, 10 days from the date of the test.
Does the district require employees to submit proof of vaccination?
No, this is not permitted at this time.
Does the district require employees to be vaccinated?
No, vaccinations are encouraged as a matter of public and personal safety. Vaccines cannot be required by the District.

Close Contact Quarantine
How long do I have to isolate if identified as being in close contact with a COVID positive indivual?
KISD recommends following CDC guidelines which state; unvaccinated and unmasked individuals should isolate for 10 days or return on day 7 with a negative PCR test on day 5 if close contact is identified.
If I am fully vaccinated, and 14 days have passed since becoming fully vaccinated, do I have to isolate if deemed in Close Contact with a COVID positive individual?
Current CDC guidelines do not require you to isolate.
If I am not vaccinated but I wear a face-covering at all times, do I have to isolate if deemed in Close Contact with a COVID positive individual?
Current CDC guidelines do not require you to isolate.
How will I know if I have been deemed in close contact?
KISD will contact trace to the greatest extent possible. Parents/Employees who are deemed in close contact will be contacted by phone.
If returning early from close contact isolation, a negative lab confirmed PCR COVID-19 (administered on day 5 of isolation) test result may be submitted to the following people:
Employees: Supervisor/Campus Nurse/Admin COVID Point of Contact

COVID-19 Communication
Will KISD notify parents/employees of a COVID positive case?
TEA no longer requires school districts to notify parents or employees of a COVID-19 case. However, KISD will continue to contact trace and notify people by phone identified in Close Contact of a COVID positive individual.
Will KISD report cases to the state?
Yes, in accordance with TEA regulations, KISD will continue to report positive COVID cases to the Department of State Health Services.
Will KISD reload its COVID-19 dashboard?
KISD will share positive case information with the Department of State Health Services, which operates a public viewing dashboard.

Rapid Screening
What will it cost and do I need insurance?
The rapid screenings are free for KISD students and staff, and health insurance is not required.
Will students need parental consent to be rapid screened?
Parents must be present and will need to sign a consent form before their child is tested. If you are 18 or above, you do not need parental consent.
Who will get rapid screeners?
KISD students and staff will be prioritized. These rapid screenings are optional. Family members and spouses do not qualify.
How is the rapid screener administered?
This program uses BinaxNOW tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril.
Will the COVID-19 screeners KISD is offering be reported on the KISD Public Dashboard?
The Rapid screeners will automatically be reported to DSHS once the QR code is scanned. The case will be reflected on the DSHS dashboard under probable cases. The case will not be reflected on the KISD COVID Dashboard.
Can staff and students come to school if their rapid screener is a probable positive?
- It is recommended that the individual get a PCR lab-confirmed test.
- The CDC recommends the individual isolate and meet the return to work/school criteria before returning to a KISD facility.
- KISD only excludes individuals who have a lab-confirmed PCR test.
Will KISD contact trace for probable positive cases?
No, it is not a PCR lab-confirmed test.
