Board of Trustees Scholarship Application

    Each year, the Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees awards numerous scholarships to deserving seniors through funds established by the wills of Parrie Haynes, Franklin and Emily E. Pratt, Maude Moore Wood, and Ira Cross, Jr. Two scholarships for Harker Heights High School cross-country athletes are also available.

    On behalf of the KISD Board of Trustees, we encourage careful review of the information below regarding the scholarships. Following a review of the criteria for each opportunity, please give thoughtful consideration to applying.

    This year a total of $101,000 will be distributed. Listed below is key information that may be helpful in determining the qualifications for any of these scholarship opportunities. Specifying a particular scholarship on the application is not necessary. One application form will be used and considered for all the scholarships.

    Parrie Haynes - This scholarship, provided through the estate of Parrie Haynes, provides financial assistance for KISD graduates attending (a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) a “four-year college or university in the state of Texas.”  Traditionally, these scholarships are awarded to students with very high academic standing. Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected from the graduating classes of the current year from Chaparral, Early College, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker high schools.

    Franklin and Emily E. Pratt - This scholarship, provided through the estate of Franklin and Emily E. Pratt, provides assistance to students with significant financial need who wish to pursue their studies (a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) in the academic department of any accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education including accredited career/vocational schools approved by the selection committee.
    The KISD Board will consider various factors in determining student need including FAFSA Income Verification and most recent 1040 Tax Form.  Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected from the graduating classes of the current year from Chaparral, Early College, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker high schools.

    Maude Moore Wood - This scholarship, provided through the estate of Maude Moore Wood, provides funds for post-secondary education to students with significant financial need. The KISD Board will consider various factors in determining student need including FAFSA Income Verification and the most recent 1040 Tax Form. Recipients must attend a public or private, two-year or four-year institution of higher education or a career or vocational training program which has a program of at least two years. Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected from the graduating classes of the current year from Chaparral, Early College, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker high schools.

    Ira E. Cross Jr. - This scholarship, provided through the estate of Ira E. Cross, Jr., provides financial assistance for post-secondary education (a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) to students with financial need. The KISD Board will consider various factors in determining student need including FAFSA Income Verification and most recent 1040 Tax Form.  Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected from the graduating classes of the current year from Chaparral, Early College, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker high schools.
    When applicable, at least one of these scholarships shall be awarded to a student who has taken high school agriculture courses and/or been active in the 4-H programs. Students interested in this scholarship should specify any courses taken in agriculture in the high school years or identify activities in the 4-H program.

    Application And Selection Process

    A scholarship application may be downloaded by clicking here.  Completed typed applications, along with a 200-word essay entitled: “Why I am applying for this scholarship,” and income verification must be submitted to the school counselors’ office. The deadline for submission of an application is Friday, April 5, 2024.

    Each high school campus has established a screening process to identify five students who will advance to the interview phase of the selection process. Interviews for the Parrie Haynes, Franklin and Emily E. Pratt, Maude Moore Wood, and Ira Cross, Jr. scholarships will be conducted during the first week in May 2023 by the KISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent, and members of the Superintendents’ staff. Recipients will be selected from among those students interviewed.
