Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
-
Established more than 35 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, today AVID impacts nearly 1.5 million students in 46 states and 16 other countries/territories. Simply, AVID brings research-based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementary, secondary, and higher education and provides educators with training and methodologies that develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.
- Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
Available to middle and high school students.
In middle and high school, AVID students receive support in an elective class - called AVID - taught within the school day by a trained AVID teacher. As part of AVID, students are required to engage in challenging coursework by enrolling in pre-Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate courses. The support provided by the AVID class helps students to be successful in these college-preparatory classes.
Students are invited into the AVID program based on criteria such as STAAR scores, grades, attendance, behavior, course enrollment, and special needs. AVID focuses on mid-performing students, especially those at-risk of underachievement, who are capable of completing the college preparatory path with additional support.
