• Supporting Student Success

Bilingual education programs are designed to make grade-level academic content accessible to emergent bilinguals through the development of literacy and academic skills in the child's primary language and English. The academic, linguistic, and cultural background of emergent bilinguals is used in a bilingual education program as the platform for acquiring grade-level content material in the primary language and in English.

In 2024-2025, Killeen ISD will offer two Spanish bilingual education programs: Transitional Late Exit (2nd through 5th grade) and Dual Language One Way (Prekindergarten through First-Grade ONLY). These programs are offered at the following KISD campuses:

    • Harker Heights Elementary
    • Killeen Elementary
    • Peebles Elementary
    • Pershing Park Elementary
    • Trimmier Elementary
    • Oveta Culp Hobby Elementary (PK3 ONLY on post)

      Dual-Language One-Way

      • Dual-Language One-Way program

Eligible Emergent Bilingual Prekindergarten through First Grade students in Killeen ISD will engage in the One-Way Dual Language Immersion Program. This bilingual model is a full-time program of instruction in which identified students are served in both English and Spanish to attain full proficiency, including grade-level literacy skills, in their primary language as well as English to participate equitably in school. One-Way Dual Language follows an 80/20 language distribution model. The goal of Dual Language is for program participants to become bilingual and biliterate in both Spanish and English.

      Transitional Bilingual Late Exit Program

      • Transitional Bilingual Late Exit program

Killeen ISD currently implements the Transitional Late Exit model in grades 2nd through 5th grades. The Transitional Late Exit model is a full-time program of instruction in which students identified as Emergent Bilinguals receive academic instruction in both English and Spanish to meet reclassification criteria to be successful in English-only instruction through the fifth grade. The goal of late-exit transitional bilingual education is for program participants to use their primary language as a resource while acquiring full proficiency in English.

      ESL Program

      • English as a Second Language (ESL)

Killeen ISD implements the ESL program on all campuses for grades PK-12th. The goal of ESL programs is to make grade-level academic content accessible to Emergent Bilinguals. ESL programs target English language development, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, through academic content instruction that is linguistically and culturally responsive. The ESL program uses the academic, linguistic, and cultural background of Emergent bilinguals as a platform for acquiring grade-level content material in English.  The goal of this program is to attain full proficiency in English to participate equitably in school.
