FAFSA- A Texas Graduation Requirement!
Every Texas student enrolled in 12th grade during the 2023-2024 school year must do one of the following in order to graduate:
- Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or
- Complete and submit a Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA), or
- Submit a signed opt-out form to your school counselor.
Which one is right for you?
FAFSA: If you are a U.S. citizen and complete the FAFSA, you may be eligible to receive financial aid (grants, loans, work study programs, etc.). Many colleges will offer you scholarships based upon your FAFSA submission also. The FAFSA typically opens on October 1st each year. For the 2024 -2025 academic year, however, it will open in December 2023. Your best chance to receive aid is to apply EARLY.
TASFA: If you are a foreign student or non-citizen, you may be eligible to be classified as a Texas resident for tuition purposes. If so, you may also be eligible to receive state financial aid. The TASFA deadline is January 15th, 2024.
Opt-Out Form: Students who do not complete a FAFSA or TASFA, may fulfill the graduation requirement by submitting a completed and signed Opt-Out form to your school counselor.
