Kunz Named KISD STEEL Award Winner for November

Business operations specialist Tarra Kunz wants everyone she interacts with to find success in what they do, and is willing to do all she can to assist them in that process.

Many of those same people wanted Kunz to be recognized for all of that kindness.

Kunz, a well-respected and personable member of the Killeen ISD family, was selected as one of two STEEL award winners for the month of November, and recently was recognized by a jubilant bunch of colleagues that dropped by unannounced with tambourines, cowbells and well-wishes in tow.

STEEL, an acronym for Supporting the Education and Empowerment of Learners, is presented once a month to two KISD employees, whose dedication, work-ethic and spirit exemplify the essence of the prestigious token of appreciation that is created by students at the Killeen Career Center. November's other recipient was athletics stadium manager Robert Lawrence.

In her 23rd year with Killeen ISD, Kunz is characterized as a leader, a mentor and friend who doesn’t hesitate to go above and beyond.

Receiving the award

Managing director of schools Nancy Patterson said Kunz empowers others through her optimism and diligence, and the many who nominated Kunz agreed.

“Her honesty and integrity are evident in all her interactions, fostering a culture of trust and respect,” secretary Aneb Valcarcel said. “With an innate ability to handle conflict with grace and emotional intelligence, Tarra consistently demonstrates resilience and a positive attitude.”

Kunz, who did her best to shoo away tears and steady her hands when the train of award presenters made its stop, said she was shocked to be chosen for the STEEL award and felt honored to be recognized by her peers. Kunz admitted she prefers to stay out of the limelight and called herself “a behind-the-scenes girl.” Still, she received a record number of nominations.

“Hearing what was said brought me a sense of pride in what I do, and joy that I’ve been able to touch so many people,” Kunz said. “I’ve been blessed in my career in KISD where I have worked for many servant leaders, and they have taught me to be that way and to work with people as they transition to new positions, or new to KISD.”

Kunz began her 20-plus year career with KISD by splitting time as a records/attendance secretary at Harker Heights and Trimmier elementary schools, and also held positions at Iduma, Union Grove, Nolanville and the Career Center. Kunz said what she enjoys most about her current role is the one-on-one interactions with her colleagues.

“To see those lights come on when something clicks, totally makes my job worth it,” she said. “I like going to see everyone in their environments and helping them set up their systems, and seeing them become more knowledgeable and more confident in themselves.”
