KISD Swim Teams Set to Host Mary Jobe Winter Classic

Killeen ISD’s five swim teams are gearing up for a big splash down.
Swimmers from Chaparral, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker will chase down personal-best times and school records Saturday as they host nine other schools at the annual Mary Jobe Winter Classic, named for the former, longtime KHS swim coach and teacher.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. inside the Clements Boys and Girls Club. Other schools expected to participate are Lake Belton, Belton, Austin McCallum, Georgetown East View, Waco Midway, Pflugerville Hendrickson, Hutto, Robinson and Salado.
This is the final meet of the calendar year for KISD’s squads, which also will host the Last Splash Invite on Jan. 11 before diving into district meets.
KISD swimmers enter Saturday’s home meet after participating Dec. 7 in the Temple ISD Elf on the Shelf.
Headlining that watery gathering were Killeen High’s Anthony Helmer, who took gold in the boys 500-yard freestyle, and the Chaparral boys, who placed third among 12 teams.
In amassing 55 points, the Bobcats got top-three performances from their 200-yard medley relay (Jesse Grant, Connor Bratton, Alexander Perry and Jamarian Hall –– third), Bratton in the 200 freestyle (third), Perry in the 200 individual medley (third), the 400 free relay (Perry, Grant, Hall and Bratton –– third) and Grant in the 100 backstroke.
Other top-three showings for KISD swimmers included Harker Heights’ Matthias Ulch (second, 100 free) and Shoemaker’s Gabrielle Batts (third, 100 breaststroke).
