Weekend Roundup: Lady Eagles Win Gold Bracket at Calallen Tournament

It turned out to be a banner weekend for Killeen ISD basketball teams.

 

Capping an exciting weekend that included their coach, Sherry McKinnon, reaching the 400-win plateau, the Ellison Lady Eagles went 5-0 at the Calallen Battle on the Bay tournament to capture the gold bracket championship.

 

Baseline dribble 12-9Shooting a 3 12-9Faith Etienne, who earned the tournament’s most valuable player, posted 19 points as the Lady Eagles battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit during a 46-39 victory over West Oso. Indigo Newburn added eight points and Jade Oladipo had 10 for Ellison. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.

 

The Chaparral Lady Bobcats went 3-2 at the long-running Jack Frost Tournament in Georgetown, finishing as runners-up in the silver division after a narrow 47-41 loss to Class 5A No. 2 Argyle.

 

In Mesquite, Arianna Jennings had 21 points, Amanda Grate added 11 and Makayla Gaston 10 to pace the Harker Heights Lady Knights to a 45-28 win over Madisonville in the Clay Cooley Real Texas Hoopfest consolation final.

 

Jennings was picked for the all-tournament team.

 

Harker Heights’ Keyaun Martin and Elijah Gibson made the all-tournament team at the Granbury Kia Tournament in which the Knights went 3-2.

Wrestling

The Chaparral Lady Bobcats placed second overall –– just 6½ points behind first-place Copperas Cove –– Saturday at the Belton ISD Brawl by the Lake.

 

The 100-pound final featured an all-Lady Bobcats match between Lanaya Padilla and Dulce Samaniego, and Padilla pulled out the victory with a narrow 11-9 decision. Also topping the podium for the Lady Bobcats were Mikayla Hudson (107) and Kaelyn Reynolds (138). Makayla Davis (235) and Alyssa Thomas (132) were second, and Avery Wiltzius was fourth.

 

In the boys portion of the event, the Bobcats picked up two third-place finishes with Adrien Wright (126) and Mitchell Dye (150) and got a fourth-place showing from Jadin Hall (138) and Antonio Simmons (150).

 

A number of podium finishes at the San Antonio Rough Rider Invitational propelled the Harker Heights Lady Knights to the team silver –– just 3½ behind meet winner Converse Judson. Emily Malbrough (107) was second, Kimora Henry (120) was third, Aniya McConico (132) fourth, Cheyenne Metcalf (165) was fourth and Saniah Ebron (235) was third.

 

The Harker Heights boys had a pair finish fourth –– Randall King (150) and Vincent Yang (138) in the boys copetition in San Antonio.

 

Darlah Louis-Charles (100 pounds) was Ellison’s top finisher at the Rockwall ISD Rumble at the Rock on Saturday, placing third.

 

Shoemaker’s Demetria Taylor (185) was third in the Georgetown Throwdown.

 

For the Killeen boys at the Belton ISD Brawl by the Lake, Anthony Rivera (144) and Labron Washington (150) took second place, Damirte Hemphill (190) and Ethan Isbell (285) were third and Jeornuel Ruiz (106) finished fourth. The Lady Roos’ performance was highlighted by Ava Armah (152), who placed third.
