High school spirit poured from the top of one side of the gym, across the hardwood floor, up the other side and back again.
For well over an hour, Early College High School students, seated (and often standing) in separate corners of the gym on the Fort Cavazos campus in distinctive color T-shirts displayed their excitement.
They cheered their classes, rocked along with a student band and played a series of competitive games, including tug-of-war, musical chairs and pac man.
All the while, they yelled for their specific classes. In some games, staff members took part.
The color wars pep rally was just the opening act for the main event, a series of Powder Puff football games between the classes.
Many students wore mums of varying sizes. They elected a queen and king. A dance was scheduled for Saturday.
Early College High School, the specialized KISD high school divided among two campuses that partners with Central Texas College, has always provided some version of intramural sports and days of spirit activity.
This one, though, brought an added level of excitement and competition.
Senior Class President Eli Salmeron and Vice President Andrea Guevara did a lot of the planning and organizing with the rest of the class officers and guided students through much of the pep rally activities.
“We decided to combine it all and do a color wars, powder puff day. So, we involved all the classes and competed against each other to see who has the most spirit,” said Guevara.
“I see extreme excitement all over,” she said. “It’s like a Trolls movie. That’s what it reminds me of, I just think of glitter everywhere. It’s 100 percent what we were hoping for, just everybody showing out for their class.”
When asked directly, the senior class vice president didn’t hesitate – Early College High School has the most spirit and the senior class is the most spirited of all.
“Today we have a full event day,” said Salmeron.
“Just show pride for your class is probably the biggest thing. We want to amp up the crowd before the powder puff game. It’s a competition between the classes again,” he said.
“It’s a lot of positive, competitive energy. Everybody wants to win.”
