Weekend Roundup: Middle School Volleyball District Titles Decided
After each went 8-1 in the regular season, the eighth-grade Smith and seventh-grade Nolan volleyball teams Saturday capped a memorable 2024 by claiming KISD district championships.
The top 8 teams after matches played Oct. 21 advanced to postseason tournaments. Quarterfinals were held Oct. 24, and the winners moved to Saturday’s semifinals, and eventually, the finals.
Smith, coached by Autumn Donovan, topped Audie Murphy on Thursday then got past Patterson in the semifinals. The Lady Leopards wrapped up their title in a hard-fought match versus Union Grove, which also had a stellar 8-1 record in the regular season.
The Smith volleyball team includes Lameesha Jeter, Taraji Smith, Shermiya Overton, Kaya Henderson, Jaleah Castro, Jaiyeola Oladipo, Dainah Millet, Zinnia Boyd, Jocelynn Townsend, Jaedyn Jelinek, Kaylani Bostic and Mia Gines.
In the championship match, Millet delivered two kills, Smith had one kill and two blocks, Henderson, Oladipo and Castro had one ace and one kill apiece, and Boyd produced 19 assists for the Lady Leopards.
Nolan’s trek to the seventh-grade crown included a quarterfinal victory over Manor and a semifinal triumph over Audie Murphy. The Lady Mustangs, led by head coach Jerry Stutz, then toppled Smith in the final.
Playing this season for the Lady Mustangs were Gabi Fox, Mackenzie Hobbs, Emma Jeffery, Paisley Smith, Miranda Garcia, Erin Mann, Chloe Thomas, Ella Sturgeon, Aniya Lister and Katheryn Brown.
In the championship match, Fox had two aces, Smith and Sturgeon posted two kills apiece, Brown recorded nine service points and two aces, Lister helped with 10 service points, landed five kills and an ace, and Mann had one kill.
High school football
At Searles Stadium on Friday night, Malachi Jerome threw for 199 yards and a touchdown to Brandon Brown Jr., and Shoemaker defeated Copperas Cove 30-12 in District 12-6A.
Brown also had a rushing TD, as did Johnathan Pompey and Isaiah Butler-Tanner, and the Grey Wolves (6-3, 3-2) won a third straight game heading into their regular-season finale against Harker Heights (6-2, 4-0) on Nov. 1.
Georgetown East View 38, Chaparral 33
The Bobcats (2-6, 0-5) got 263 yards passing from Bryson Coleman on Friday night at Birkelbach Stadium in their most explosive offensive performance in District 8-5A-I but came up just short of a victory on the road.
Amone Tolliver had 128 yards and a TD receiving, and Davian Arthur added 87 yards receiving. Coleman and Arthur each ran for two scores.
Brenham 50, Ellison 28
Quarterback Sidney Holland Jr. again surpassed 300-yards passing Friday night against the Cubs (7-1, 3-0), who had the final say over the Eagles (4-4, 2-1) in the District 10-5A-II showdown at Leo Buckley Stadium.
Holland finished with 366 yards passing and TD tosses to Travaris Turner-Smith (two), Prince Hall and Kae'Andre Sayles.
Waco Midway 44, Killeen 17
The Roos were upended Friday night at Panther Stadium and now head into their bye week before playing the regular-season finale Nov. 7 at home against Bryan.
High school swimming
KISD’s five swim teams participated Saturday in the Waco Midway Spooktacular, recording a number of personal-best times and more.
Chaparral head coach Tawnya Roupe said the boys 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays set new program marks, and Alex Perry lowered his program-record time in the 100 backstroke.
