Three From Ellison Earn District 16-5A Superlatives

Streaks appear to be a trend for Ellison’s boys basketball team.

McIver layupParks stopsFollowing a season in which the Eagles captured their third straight district and regional titles while advancing to a third consecutive Class 5A state tournament, two players earned All-District superlative recognition for a second year in a row.

And their coach recorded a three-peat, too.

Ellison senior Ahziel “JoJo” McIver was voted most valuable player, junior Sean Parks earned defensive player of the year and head coach Alberto Jones Jr. tabbed coach of the year, highlighting the Eagles’ loaded All-District 16-5A haul.

It was the second consecutive MVP for McIver and second defensive player of the year honor for Parks. Jones has been awarded coach of the year three years running, five out of the last six seasons and eight times overall in his 17-year stint at his alma mater.

Chaparral junior post Carlos Robinson was selected first-team all-district after helping the Bobcats place fourth and advance to the playoffs for the first time in program history.

McIver averaged 13.9 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game during Ellison’s 10-0 run to the District 16-5A championship this season. Parks produced 17.4 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds a night.
