• In the spring of their 5th grade year, students are asked to select their elective for middle school.  Those who choose orchestra will be invited to participate in one of the instrument fairs held across the district in order to select an instrument.    At the fairs, students will be allowed to try the various orchestra instruments.  Our string experts will be available to help students choose the type and size of instrument they would be most successful in playing.  Student preference, physical characteristics and the needs of the program are all factors to consider.

Students who miss the opportunity to participate in the district instrument fairs are encouraged to directly email the orchestra director at their child's campus to set up an opportunity to get fitted for an instrument.

The orchestra program begins with group instruction in the sixth grade. These classes meet daily and are organized into either low string (cello, string bass) or high string (violin, viola) sections.  The instructional focus for beginning orchestra is on the development of fundamental playing skills and music literacy.   Families may elect to borrow a school owned instrument, as they are available, or may choose to rent or purchase their own through a local dealer.  Before purchasing an instrument, please check with your child's teacher.

While instruction begins in 6th grade, students in 7th and even 8th grade are still welcome and can be accommodated into a beginning orchestra class.

Beginning orchestra students can typically expect to participate in two to three performances each year.  They may also elect to participate in a district-sponsored Solo and Ensemble event in the spring.
