Supporting Student Needs
Killeen ISD high schools have developed a multi-faceted Power Hour program within the daily lunch periods. Students may have time to take advantage of tutoring, extracurricular activities and to eat lunch. Coaches, directors, and sponsors of other UIL activities use Power Hour to make grade checks and help students succeed academically. Campus intervention teams are formed with teachers providing tutoring for credit recovery, end-of-course test preparation, and graduation planning.
Something For Everyone
-
Power Hour gives students a chance to join groups, clubs, and take advantage of tutoring while not having to juggle transportation, work, and other activities. The added scheduled time allows students to be proactive in getting the academic help they need to avoid falling behind.
Closed Lunch Guidelines
-
Beginning in August 2022, all KISD high schools will be closed campuses for lunch, with the exception of seniors that have met the College, Career, and Military Readiness criteria and have their parent's permission to leave campus.
The KISD Board of Trustees approved closing high school campuses for lunch due to growing safety concerns and the added capacity with the opening of Chaparral High School.
All freshman, sophomore, and juniors will remain on campus during lunch. Eating areas are being expanded throughout high schools to accommodate closed campus lunches.
