Physical Education

  • Elementary School students in prekindergarten through grades 5 are required to have 30 minutes daily or 135 minutes weekly of “vigorous physical activity”. Also, at least 50 percent of the physical education class is used for actual student activity. Campuses design a schedule that best meet this requirement. Instruction is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for all grades. KISD has adopted SPARK (Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids) as the curriculum to be used by staff in physical education instruction.

    Middle School students, grades 6, 7 and 8, are required to complete four semesters of physical education in the three years of middle school. 7th and 8th grade students may participate in athletics, football, basketball, girl’s volleyball, tennis and track, to substitute for physical education. Students are required to have 135 minutes weekly of “vigorous physical activity”. Also, at least 50 percent of the physical education class is used for actual student activity. Students may meet the physical education requirement by participating in Off-Campus Physical Education (OCPE).     High School students are required to complete one credit of physical education to meet graduation requirements with ! credit being Foundations of Personal Fitness. Athletics, marching band, ROTC, drill team, Dance I-IV and two or three credit Career and Technology work-based training courses substitute for the physical education credit. Students may meet the physical education requirement by participating in Off-Campus Physical Education (OCPE).
